Siemens has formed a global strategic alliance with Electric Power Group, based in Pasadena, California. The partnership combines Siemens’ grid automation portfolio with EPG’s analytics. The companies will integrate EPG’s synchrophasor technology and wide-area monitoring systems into Siemens’ power automation portfolio to help utilities and grid operators manage grid complexity, operations, stability and resilience.
The energy transition is changing power grids through variable renewable generation and changing load patterns, creating challenges that may require capabilities beyond traditional supervisory control and data acquisition systems. EPG’s technology uses high-speed, time-synchronized data to provide a real-time view of grid behavior. Synchrophasors provide GPS-synchronized measurements of voltage and current waveforms, including magnitude and phase angle, multiple times per second. Wide-area monitoring systems collect and process this data from multiple points to provide a real-time view of the grid.
The joint solution is intended for transmission and distribution system operators, energy companies and operators of critical power infrastructure. The companies said the benefits include real-time grid monitoring, faster fault detection and response and improved situational awareness for grid operators.
