SunCubes uses AI simulation to develop UAV charging systems

SunCubes, a deep-tech startup developing wireless energy transmission technology for unmanned aerial systems, has announced that it is using engineering AI tools from SimScale, a cloud-based simulation platform. The company plans to use the technology to develop laser-based charging systems that could allow drones and unmanned autonomous vehicles (UAVs) to recharge during flight or at remote stations without physical contact.

Battery capacity and powertrain performance affect the range and operating time of drones and UAVs. McKinsey identifies battery and powertrain technology as factors that limit drone delivery range. Research into the use of drones and UAVs for energy infrastructure monitoring also identifies range as a consideration for inspecting pipelines and remote assets such as offshore wind turbines. In agriculture, operators on large farms may need to replace drone batteries manually during operations.

The drone and UAV market is expected to grow from $24.4 billion in 2025 to $52.1 billion in 2033 across sectors including energy, infrastructure, agriculture, logistics, construction and security. SunCubes is developing in-flight charging technology to address range and operating-time requirements in commercial and industrial drone applications.

SunCubes’ engineering team is using SimScale’s cloud-based simulation platform, including its AI-powered agentic simulation capabilities, to support the design and validation of UAV systems and wireless energy-transfer hardware. The team uses simulation to evaluate the thermal, structural and aerodynamic performance of its drone designs and reduce the need for some physical prototypes during product development.
