Wars in both Ukraine and Iran have demonstrated a new factor in 21st century warfare: low cost drones. The ability of modern low-cost UAVs to saturate modern air defense systems, and absorb large quantities of very expensive defensive missiles, has put a premium on mass production of weapons for future preparedness.

In an effort to kick start this urgent need, the Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing Institute has announced an initiative which calls for project submissions to use advanced industrial automation to reduce Department of War cost and acquisition barriers. The program is open to the public, with a September 16, 2026 deadline.
